Slime mold is a foamy fungal growth commonly found on mulch and lawn grass. This mold is usually white, orange, brown, purple or gray in color. Freshly ground mulch is most often affected by slime mold during periods of wet weather.
While slime mold is unsightly, it is not harmful to grass or plants. This mold uses organic matter, such as mulch, to reproduce its spores. Certain types of fungus in wood mulch produce mushrooms.
Chemical control is not necessary for slime mold, because the effects of this fungus are primarily cosmetic. Raking the affected area removes white fungus.
