How to Remove the Spool to Replace a Line for a Grass Trimmer

Weed eaters are common homeowner tools used to trim grass and weeds around landscapes. Most weed eaters use nylon string as the primary cutting device, which spins around quickly to cut grass and weeds. You will need to replace the nylon string every so often as the string will run out. This is typically a simple project as weed eater manufacturers understand that many homeowners do not have a technical background and will need a simple process for replacing the string.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the spark plug cable to prevent injury. Pull the cap off the spark plug on the back of the weed eater motor. Unplug an electric weed eater from the extension cord.

    • 2

Turn over the weed eater to expose the spool seat. Twist the cap covering the spool to loosen it, following the arrow on the weed eater.

    • 3

Pull out the spool carefully. Remove any old line left on the spool. Restring the spool with fresh line, following the directional arrows to wind it correctly.

    • 4

Replace the spool; feed the nylon line into the outlet hole. Screw the cap back on tightly to ensure the spool stays in place.

    • 5

      Replace the spark plug.
