How to Clean a Deck Lawn Mower System

If you place your lawnmower on its side you might be surprised at the amount of dirt and old grass that has accumulated on the undercarriage of the mower deck. This buildup can cause your deck to rot and cause your mower to under-perform. Cleaning your mower at least once a month during the cutting season will help your mower perform better and last longer.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the gas from the mower and disconnect the spark plug wire. To avoid wasting gas, run the lawnmower until it runs out of gas. This allows you to get some mowing completed and avoid wasting gas.

    • 2

Stand the mower on its side. This gives you access to the undercarriage of the mower deck.

    • 3

Spay the undercarriage of the mower deck with a garden hose with the nozzle at full blast. This will saturate the dirt and old grass and make it easier to remove. In fact, most of the dirt and grass will blow off due to the water pressure.

    • 4

Mix a bucket of hot water and a mild dish soap and scrub the undercarriage of the mower deck with a nylon-bristled bush until clean.

    • 5

Hose off the undercarriage of the mower deck to remove any loose dirt and soap.

    • 6

Place the mower back onto its wheels.

    • 7

Spray the top of the mower deck with hose water and then clean the surface of the mower deck. Use fresh hot water, dish soap and a clean rag.

    • 8

Allow the mower an hour of drying time before reconnecting the spark plug wire and refilling with gasoline.
