How to Troubleshoot a Husqvarna 51 Chain Saw

The Husqvarna 51 is a lightweight, single-person use chain saw with a 3.1 horsepower engine and anti-vibration handlebar system. Designed for home use rather than more commercial operation, the Husqvarna 51, which was first introduced in 1990, is designed for durability. But problems arise over time. While major problems will involve taking the saw to a trained mechanic, there are easy troubleshooting steps that any operator can take to ensure optimum performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to see whether the saw has enough fuel and the correct mixture. The 51 uses a mixture of unleaded gasoline and two-stroke engine oil specifically designed for chain saws.

    • 2

Remove any dirt or debris from the fuel filter that may be preventing the carburetor from operating at optimum performance.

    • 3

Check that the saw is using only approved chain oil and that there is enough for proper operation. If chain oil is not available, EP 90 transmission oil can be used.

    • 4

Clean any dirt or debris from the air filter. A clogged air filter can cause the carburetor to malfunction, the engine to stop or excessive wear on various internal parts.

    • 5

Replace the spark plug if it appears to be burned out or corroded. The existing plug can be replaced if it is wiped clean of dirt and found to still carry a spark.

    • 6

Start up the engine and allow it to warm up, especially in colder weather, before using the saw.
