Homemade Bins for Grass Catchers

A grass catcher bin collects the grass while the mower is in use. This prevents the build-up of grass clippings on the lawn, which can look cluttered and make additional work, if you want to collect the clippings afterward. Use the grass catcher with the lawnmower during mowing, or remove it from the mower and simply use it to collect grass clippings after. It will take about two hours to make the grass catcher bin.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of plywood to a measurement of four square feet. Wear eye protection to keep the sawdust out of your eyes. You can also wear a dust mask, to keep it out of your mouth and lungs.

    • 2

Drill a ¼ inch hole in each corner of the board. Keep each hole about ½ an inch away from the edges of the wood, to prevent it from cracking.

    • 3

Cut four, two foot long pieces of wire. Wrap the wire around each hole in the corner of the wood.

    • 4

Make a bag from heavy canvas with a bottom large enough to hold the plywood board. Make the sides of the bag about two feet high.

    • 5

Slide the board and the wires inside the bag. Poke the holes of the wire through the top of the bag to hold the sides up straight.

    • 6

Screw a small wheel to each corner of the grass catcher bin, using the 1/2 inch screws.

    • 7

Attach the tops of the wires to the handle of the lawnmower. Cut a hole in the side of the bag to fit over the mouth of the lawnmower that spits the cut grass out. Tape the bag around the mouth with duct tape.
