How to Remove Underground Wasps

Wasps are pollen-seeking insects that build nests either above or below the ground in order to store the pollen and feed it to the larvae they hatch. Unfortunately, these nests are not always in the most convenient places, and oftentimes nest removal is required. If you would like to remove an underground wasp nest, you should take a few precautions.

Instructions

    • 1

Investigate the nest first to clarify that the nest is, in fact, a wasp nest. If it is a honeybee nest (honeybees are round, black-and-yellow striped insects), leave it alone, as these bees are much less harmful than wasps, and they help create honey, which we use almost daily.

    • 2

Dress from head to toe in heavy, long-sleeved clothing. Wear pants and boots in case the wasps start to swarm and attack you.

    • 3

Attack the wasp nest at night, when most of the wasps are inside the nest. This allows you to maximize the amount of damage you do to the nest, so they won't build in that same place again.

    • 4

Pour a mixture of soap and water into the underground wasp nest's entrance, and quickly cover it up with soil from around the area. Evacuate the area for at least a few hours. It is best just to leave it overnight, and examine the nest the next day.

    • 5

Examine the nest, and if you find that wasps are still flying around, purchase an insecticide dust mixture and dump it into the nest opening to fully exterminate the nesting area.
