Choose the direction in which the tree will fall. Choose an area clear of structures, buildings, homes and power and telephone lines.
Plan your escape path. The escape path must be directly behind the falling tree and free of obstacles. You use this path to move safely away from the falling tree after you have made the last cut in the tree trunk.
Fill the chainsaw with fuel, and examine the quality of the blade. If the chainsaw blade is damaged with kicks or dull, replace the worn blade with a new one.
Don a pair of thick work gloves and safety goggles. Start the chainsaw. Begin creating the undercut on the side of the tree that is facing the fall direction. The undercut is a 45-degree notch through one-fourth of the trunk diameter.
Move carefully to the opposite side of the trunk, and make the backcut 2 inches above the undercut; do not go all the way through the trunk to the undercut.
Shut the chainsaw off and immediately walk away from the falling tree using your escape path. Walk carefully but quickly. Stay away from the tree until it falls on its own. This may take several minutes.
Use the chainsaw to cut the tree and large limbs into smaller, more manageable pieces to make removal easier.
