According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, tall fescue is distributed throughout most of the United States. A Texas A&M University map shows tall fescue as being distributed throughout the entire country except the hottest parts of the South.
Highly adaptable, tall fescue grows best in fertile soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. It shows peak growth with soil temperatures as low as 40 degrees and can grow in both cool and humid climates.
A cool-season grass, tall fescue sees peak growth in spring and fall. Fall planting in late August to mid September is widely regarded as the best time to plant, as spring-planted grass can suffer from summer injury. You can establish tall fescue from seed through any common seeding method; seed should be applied at a rate of 50 to 100 pounds per acre.
