Tall Fescue Distribution

Tall fescue is a widely used turf and forage grass in the United States and Canada. Its toughness and tolerance of less than ideal conditions have made it one of the most widely planted and distributed grasses.
  1. Distribution

    • According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, tall fescue is distributed throughout most of the United States. A Texas A&M University map shows tall fescue as being distributed throughout the entire country except the hottest parts of the South.

    Adaptation

    • Highly adaptable, tall fescue grows best in fertile soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0. It shows peak growth with soil temperatures as low as 40 degrees and can grow in both cool and humid climates.

    Establishment

    • A cool-season grass, tall fescue sees peak growth in spring and fall. Fall planting in late August to mid September is widely regarded as the best time to plant, as spring-planted grass can suffer from summer injury. You can establish tall fescue from seed through any common seeding method; seed should be applied at a rate of 50 to 100 pounds per acre.
