How to Trim Fence Posts

The posts of a fence need to be the same height so the weight is evenly distributed. The best way to do this is to trim the posts before you assemble and build the fence. It is possible, however, that the posts still might not be the same height after assembly because of how the ground differs at each post. You may need to trim the posts again on the assembled fence if this is the case.

Instructions

  1. Unassembled Posts

    • 1

Lay the fence posts up against a wall if you have not yet assembled and built the fence. Line them up against the wall, placing the shortest posts to the far left for easy reference.

    • 2

Place a level measuring tool up against the shortest post about a quarter inch from the top. Make sure the air bubble within the level's water tube is in the center, meaning it is exactly horizontal.

    • 3

Draw a chalk line along this post and the others, creating a cut line across all of the posts.

    • 4

Cut the posts along the line with your saw.

    Assembled Fence

    • 5

Connect a chalk line tool to the farthest left post and drag it all the way across the posts from left to right. Check and see which post has the lowest chalk mark.

    • 6

Lower the chalk tool to a quarter inch below the top end of the shortest post.

    • 7

Have a second person place the level tool up against the chalk tool and raise/lower the chalk tool until it lines up with the level tool with the air bubble centered.

    • 8

Drag the chalk line back against each of the posts at this level to create the cut line.

    • 9

Trim the top edges of the posts using your saw on the cut lines.
