Types of Snow Shovels

Wintertime brings snow and shoveling, which can be hard on the body. Manufacturers make different shovel types to accommodate just about everyone. Before you purchase a shovel for snow shoveling, you should know about the different types of snow shovels and how each one will affect the way you remove the snow from walks and driveways.
  1. Snow Pusher

    • Snow pushers are meant to push the snow. Some snow pushers have wheels, which makes it easier to push the snow. Some have a scoop-shaped head or a flat head with a handle for pushing snow without the wheels. Pusher snow shovels should not be used for picking up the snow and moving it to a new location. The pusher shovels are easy on the back, but require leg and arm strength to use.

    Ergonomic Shovels

    • Ergonomic shovels have a flat shovel head and a bent handle. The bend allows someone to stand straight up and lift the shovel without bending over. These types of shovels are made with different length handles to meet the height requirements of those that will use the shovels. This type of shovel doesn't put strain on the lower back when picking up snow, but does require leg and arm strength to use.

    Aluminum Shovels

    • Aluminum snow shovels are made with a flat shovel head or a scoop-shaped head. Aluminum is lightweight. The shovels have different length handles and different lengths of shovel heads. Aluminum snow shovels are good for light snow removal. The shovels will require arm, leg and back strength to use.

    Steel Snow Shovels

    • Steel snow shovels are heavy and have scoop-shaped or flat shovel heads. These shovels are good for moving large amounts of snow, but the shovel does feel like it gets heavier with use after time. The steel shovel is more durable than an aluminum shovel, but someone who uses this shovel needs to have good upper body strength.
