How to Check the Brake Shoes on a John Deere CX Gator

The John Deere CX Gator is designed to be a jack of all trades for work around the farm, ranch or work site. The CX Gator lacks the off road capabilities of more recent models, but John Deere has made up for this by making the Gator CX among the least expensive utility vehicles of its kind. A wide variety of accessories and after market parts make maintaining the CX relatively stress free. The CX tractor's braking system is manufactured with a dry disc brake located on the outside of the trans axle that is easily accessible and not difficult to remove or change.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the CX Gator on level asphalt or pavement and remove the key from the ignition.

    • 2

Place the jack at the rear and under the mower's frame. Raise the mower and set the jack stand beneath the frame. Lower the frame so it rests on the jack stands.

    • 3

Take the cap off the rear right tire, turn the axle rod and remove the "E" clip using a flat-head screwdriver. The tire will come off the axle, and the brake disc will be exposed for examination.

    • 4

Check for excessive wear and metal grinding.

    • 5

Reattach the tractor tire, put back on the "E" clip and lower the mower back to the ground.
