How to Prime My Hoover Pump

Hoover Pumping Systems makes a variety of centrifugal and end-suction centrifugal water pump systems for industrial, commercial and irrigation purposes. When first installed and after being serviced, the pump must be primed before it is run (unless the unit is self-priming). Priming a water pump involves the introduction of water to the pump to force out the air that is trapped inside. Any air that is left in the pump will act as a block to the flow of water.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the power to the pump but do not turn the pump on.

    • 2

Fill a bucket with water. Use clean water to prevent any debris from clogging the pump. If drawing the water from a tap, let the water run for a minute to make sure any rust present in the water line is flushed out before filling the bucket.

    • 3

Open the inlet pipe to the pump. Consult the pump manual for specific instructions for the model of pump to be primed. Some systems will require that the inlet water pipe be disconnected, requiring the use of a pipe wrench.

    • 4

Fill the inlet pipe to the pump with water using a funnel and quickly turn the pump on.

    • 5

Reconnect the inlet pipe, if necessary, and watch the outlet pipe of the pump. When water begins to flow, the pump is primed.
