Turn off the supply line using the shut-off valve.
Locate the backflow preventor or check valve. These devices are located between the main water line and the sprinklers, and they prevent water from flowing back into the main line.
Install the tee fitting onto the supply line after the backflow preventor but before the first sprinkler.
Select a length of PVC pipe that will reach the desired location of the expansion tank.
Attach one end of the PVC pipe to the top of the tee fitting.
Attach a 90-degree PVC adapter onto the other end of the PVC pipe. This is where the expansion tank will sit.
Cover the threads of both sides of a short PVC riser with Teflon tape.
Screw a PVC riser into the other end of the 90-degree adapter.
Screw the attachment port on the expansion tank onto the other end of the PVC riser.
Turn the main water line back on by reversing the handle on the shut-off valve. Check all attachment points for leaks.
