The Legal Heights of Mailboxes

Curbside mailboxes must meet construction and installation standards set by the United States Postal Service (USPS.) The Postal Service doesn't manufacture or sell mailboxes and mounts but inspects and approves commercially available units that meet USPS specifications. Custom-made boxes and installations can be approved on a one-time basis as long as they comply with Postal Service requirements.
  1. Height

    • Install the mailbox at a vertical height of between 41 inches and 45 inches, measured from the bottom of the mailbox to the road surface. In the event of a curb or road hindrance that prevents installation at this height, contact your local postmaster.

    Set Back

    • Allow for a 6-inch to 8-inch set back from the face of the curb or the road's edge to the mailbox door.

    Posts And Supports

    • Mounting posts should be adequate in size and strength to support the mailbox at the proper height. They should be constructed to fall away or easily bend if struck by a vehicle. Keeping the support post neat, such as free of climbing vegetation, is the responsibility of the occupant.

    Name And/Or House Number

    • The occupant's name or house number on a mailbox should be in letters at least 1-inch high.
