How to Use the Green Bins

Many regions and municipalities have a green bin program. A green bin is used to collect a home's organic waste for composting, rather than have it fill up space in landfills. Kitchen scraps and lawn waste, which can be broken down by micro-organisms, can be transformed into rich compost for use in gardens and lawns. Just like recycling paper, plastic and metal, green bin collection for composting is an environmentally conscious way to process household waste.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your green bin in the garage or somewhere outside that is within easy reach. Line the green bin with certified compostable bags.

    • 2

Place a large container or bucket in your kitchen to collect organic waste. Organic waste from a kitchen that can be added to a green bin includes fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and fish, coffee grinds, tea bags and dairy products. As the container becomes full, take it to the green bin and empty the contents into the green bin. Only place organic kitchen waste into the container or green bin.

    • 3

Tie the green bin bag once it is full and before it is collected. Place the green bin at the edge of your driveway or lawn for easy collection.
