Put on your garden gloves.
Align your shoulders toward the shrub you will be pruning.
Keep your shoulders lowered and your arms in a comfortable position. Holding your arms and shoulders in an awkward manner can lead to sore muscles.
Prune only branches that are no larger than 3 inches in diameter. If you have larger branches that need to come down, use a small hand saw.
Hold the lopper to the branch at a 45-degree angle. The angle will allow the branch to heal faster, which will prevent the spreading of disease.
Cut the branch at the neck. This is where the branch meets the trunk. Make one clean cut. Multiple cuts will give insects and disease more avenues to attack the shrub.
Repeat steps 2 through 6 for all of your pruning.
