It doesn't seem that cutting a branch off of a tree -- any tree, in fact -- would be difficult. And, as luck would have it, it isn't. But, if you wish to make a proper cut and not one that may wind up damaging the tree, a bit more than just sawing through the branch and letting it fall to the ground will be required.

Choose a site on the branch about 2 feet from the main trunk, and then cut a notch about halfway through the branch on the underside.

Move up about 6 inches and sever the branch, using a saw, cutting from top to bottom.

Cut the remaining bit of branch off at the point where the branch connects to the trunk of the tree.
