How to Turn Off Irrigation

Irrigation is used in many yards to provide water to grass, plants and flowers when rain is scarce. Many of these irrigation systems are on timers, while others are manually operated. However, no matter how the system works, every once in a while you might need to turn it off quickly. To do that, you need access to the shut-off valve and controls.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the outside faucet on the side of the house if you have simple garden hose irrigation or a soaker hose for the garden. Look for the cover plate on the ground if you have a professional irrigation system. The cover plate hides the emergency shut-off for the system.

    • 2

Rotate the house outside faucet to the right, clockwise, to close the valve and stop the water flow. Turn the lever to the right on the emergency shut-off valve of a professional system.

    • 3

Go to the control panel if you have a professional irrigation system. The panel is generally located on an outside wall or just inside a garage.

    • 4

Look for the button on the control panel labeled "off," "rain" or some variation of the two. Push the button to turn off the system so that it doesn't keep running while there is no water flow through the pipes.
