Determine the type of grass planted by inspecting the packaging for the grass seed. If you do not have the packaging, look for a sales receipt. The sales receipt may identify the type of grass. If you do not have the packing or sales receipt, cut a few blades of grass and take them to the supplier from which you purchased the seed for identification. Different types of grass require different initial growing heights before the first mowing.
Grow the grass one-third higher than you normally would allow it to grow. For example, a common grass is Bermudagrass. You may allow it to grow 2 1/2 inches high before cutting it the first time. Tall fescue, another common grass, requires a height of 4 1/2 inches before the first mowing.
Cut the grass in straight lines that run perpendicular with the length of your yard with a mulching mower. A mulching mower puts the clippings back onto the ground to act as a fertilizer.
Make wide turns. Sharp cornering causes the wheels to slide over the grass. This may damage or rip the new grass---which has short roots---out of the ground.
