How to Rid Your Land of Pigweed

Pigweed is a pesky plant that can harm crops by monopolizing vitamins and minerals in the soil and attract animals that you would not want on your land. Pigweed has built immunity to certain chemical herbicides, lending difficulty to the elimination of these weeds. While some methods make pigweed removal move along quicker, most methods are somewhat time consuming but effective.

Instructions

    • 1

Chop pigweed with hedge clippers or a scythe. You can also hire professional chopping crews to rid your land of pigweed although this route is more costly. Chopping pigweed also requires you to eliminate the pigweed roots with chemicals or pulling them from the ground by hand.

    • 2

Light a controlled fire in the area where pigweed is the most abundant. Controlled fires will burn the plant and destroy its root. Always make sure you have the proper permits from your city or county government before burning pigweed. Some states require burn permits and violators will be charged a hefty fine or jail time.

    • 3

Spray herbicides to your land to eliminate unwanted pigweed. Carefully read the manufacturer's instruction before using because some herbicides are ineffective on pigweed.

    • 4

Plow your fields before planting for the season. Plowing will eliminate pigweed and its seeds. This is done with larger plots of land as compared to small yards and backyard gardens.
