How to Kill Grass in a Garden with Cardboard

Turn a grassy area into a garden plot without using toxic chemicals that could hurt flowers and other nearby plants, or even pets and wildlife. One effective way to kill grass without using any chemicals is to cover it with cardboard. This is not a fast method for killing grass -- it takes at least four weeks to work -- but it is a safe one.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area of grass you wish to kill. For smaller plots, mark the length and width on the cardboard; for larger areas, calculate how much cardboard to gather.

    • 2

Put on leather gloves. If needed, trim the cardboard down to size using a razor knife or shears.

    • 3

Place the cardboard on the grass. Cover the cardboard with compost or shredded bark. The bark or compost should be deep enough on the cardboard to prevent it from blowing away in the wind -- between 5 and 8 inches should be adequate.
