Easy Ways to Burn Out a Tree Stump

After you've cut down your tree, trimmed away small branches, cut and split your firewood, you're still left with the stump. One way to dispose of a tree stump is to burn it. Different methods to burn a stump offer varying degrees of difficulty and effectiveness. Finding an easy way to burn a tree stump will save you time and make your task seem less of a chore.

  1. The Natural Way

    • Take the work out of stump-burning by treating it as a bonfire.

      Build a fire on top and around the base of the stump using scrap wood. Continue stoking the fire until the stump is consumed.

    The Accelerant-Assisted Fire

    • Score the top and sides of the stump several inches deep with an ax. Pour kerosene over the scored stump, wait until it is absorbed, and light the stump on fire. Repeat until the stump is reduced to charcoal and ashes. Be careful with this method.

    The Above-Ground Fire Pit

    • Create a fire pit effect to contain heat and accelerate burning.

      Use galvanized sheet metal to create a fire pit around the stump. Sink the sheet metal into the soil so that the sides of the fire pit are 8 to 12 inches above the top of the stump. Secure with rocks if necessary.

      Build a fire inside the metal enclosure using scrap wood or firewood. You can also use kerosene. The metal sides will concentrate the heat in your fire pit and burn the stump more efficiently.

    The Flameless Burn

    • You can also chemically "burn" a stump with sodium metabisulfite, known commercially as Stump Out, or fertilizer compounds such as potassium nitrate or sodium nitrate. Score the stump deeply with an axe, spread the chemical over the stump, water lightly and cover with a plastic tarp. Over the course of a season or winter, the chemicals will dissolve the wood fibers, and with no need to watch your "fire."
