Tools for Ridding of Leaves

Deciduous trees drop their leaves on the lawns in the fall. Depending on how many trees are in the yard, the leaves may be scant or completely cover the yard. There are several ways to rid the yard of leaves after they have fallen. The type of tool used depends a great deal on the size of the yard and the quantity of leaves.
  1. Rakes

    • Rakes work well for removing small areas of leaves.

Rakes are the most common type of leaf removal tools. Rakes come in different sizes and are made of various materials. Metal rakes are more durable and easier to use than the plastic rakes, as they are more prone to breakage and require a bit more pressure to move leaves. Bamboo rakes are easy to use, but also not as durable as the metal type. Use rakes for small area to scoop up leaves in a pile or move them all to one location.

    Leaf Blowers

    • Leaf blowers are good for removing leaves from patios and decks

Leaf blowers require less work than using a rake and are better for larger areas. This tool uses a strong current of wind to blow the leaves to a specific location or to clear off decks and patios. Some use electricity, and others are gas powered. Unlike rakes, leaf blowers are not effective at removing leaves that are stuck to the grass or other surfaces. Blowers generally will not work for removing wet leaves.

    Lawn Mower

    • Riding lawn mowers can also be used to remove leaves from the lawn.

Lawn mowers are useful for leaf removal as well as cutting grass. Using a mower with a bag attachment is a fast way to remove a large volume of leaves; however, the bag may require frequent emptying during use. A riding lawn mower can chop up leaves and leave them over the yard. This helps the grass because leaf pieces work into the soil and give it vital nutrients.

    Leaf Scoops or Claws

    • Leaf scoops are a claw-like tool used to pick up leaves. There are hand leaf scoops made of plastic that look like two lids with claws. These scoops are used to pick up leaves after they are raked or blown into a pile and ready to be put into bags for removal.
