How to Dispose of an Old Fire Pit

A fire ring provides for many a night of good fellowship and enjoyment with friends and family in the backyard. As they gather around the fire's warm glow, they harken back to a tradition extending to the earliest days of human history. Perhaps that is why disposing of an old, worn-out or damaged fire ring can be a time of reflection and sadness. Keeping a part of the material and reusing it in other projects creates a continuity between old and new.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear any ashes or leftover debris from the pit. If only natural wood was burned, the ashes can go into the compost pile.

    • 2

Remove stones supporting the pit and place them to the side.

    • 3

Pull the metal pit from the ground. If it has been in place for many years, this may take two people, one on each side.

    • 4

Place the pit on the curb for the sanitation department to pick up. Some departments will not remove large items, however, so many communities have metal recycling businesses to dispose of the metal pit for you.

    • 5

Clear away any sand, gravel or rocks that were under the pit. Save the material if you are going to eventually build a new fire pit or give it to a friend who might use it for his projects.

    • 6

Use the larger, previously cleared rocks in a home project such as creating a boundary for a tree mulch ring or lining the outside of a walkway or flowerbed.
