How to Replace the Pull Rope on My Toro Lawn Mower

The recoil pull starter used on Toro lawnmowers works just like any other pull starter. The spring inside the recoil starter forces the string into a wound position. When you pull the string, the teeth in the starter grab the motor shaft and crank the engine. If the string frays or snaps, you must replace the string with a new one before you can use you mower again.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the handle off the existing string if the string still is attached to the mower.

    • 2

Remove the bolts that secure the housing over the recoil pulley with a socket and ratchet. Lift the housing off the Toro and place it off to the side.

    • 3

Pull the pulley shaft off of the motor.

    • 4

Unwind the remainder of the old string and disconnect it from the pulley.

    • 5

Tie a knot on the end of the replacement string and then feed the string up through the hole in the pulley. Wind the string around the pulley three to four times.

    • 6

Slide the pulley back onto the pulley shaft.

    • 7

Thread the string though the hole in the pulley cover and then reattach the pulley to the mower's motor.

    • 8

Remove the remainder of the old string from the old rope handle. Thread the new string up through the handle, loop it back down and tie a knot with the string.
