How to Dissolve Snow

If it's left to build up, snow can turn into ice and become a safety hazard. To prevent this, you should monitor the area around your home where snow accumulates and remove it with a shovel. If, however, you can't access an area with a shovel or you can't use a shovel, try dissolving the snow with household materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle a salt, such as calcium chloride, potassium chloride or ammonium sulfate over the area covered with snow. Use about a cup of salt for every three feet of snow area.

    • 2

Spread sand over the snowy area. Sand absorbs sunlight and will heat up the area where the snow is and dissolve it. Use the same amount of sand as you would salt.

    • 3

Sprinkle alfalfa meal (a fertilizer) over the snowy area. Use the same amount of alfalfa meal as you would salt and sand.

    • 4

Sprinkle white vinegar over the snowy area. Use about a cup of vinegar for every five square feet of snow.

    • 5

Throw hot water over the snow area. The heat of the water will dissolve the snow. You'll need a lot of water to do this however; use about one cup of hot water for every one square foot of snow area.
