How to Mow With a Scag

Scag mowers are a brand of zero-turn mower used predominantly by professional landscapers and turf maintenance professionals. The purpose of a zero-turn mower is to give the mower a much tighter turning circle than a traditionally-steered lawn tractor is capable of achieving. This enables the operator to avoid having to use a reverse gear, greatly speeding up the mowing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit on the Scag mower and depress the height adjustment pedal on the right side of the operator platform by your feet. You will notice a series of holes and a pin at your right hand. This locks the deck height into position. Set the pin at the desired height, and then release the foot pedal.

Adjust the ride comfort of the mower using the lever that says "ride." You can choose either a firm or soft setting. On a Scag zero-turn, this lever is located under the operator's seat and should be adjusted prior to starting the mower.

    • 3

Set the speed control of the Scag to either high or low range using the lever located to the left of the operator's seat, and then lock the handlebars into position in front of you. Start the mower with the key start on the control panel at your right hand.

Engage the cutting deck and push forward on the handlebars to move the Scag forward. The farther forward you push the bars, the faster the mower will go. Turning the mower is essentially the same as turning a shopping cart. Pressing forward on one handle while pulling back on the other causes one wheel to go forward while the other remains stationary or move backward, depending on the model. This causes the mower to turn.
