How to Measure pH Using an Indicator

A pH indicator is a thin strip used to determine the chemical makeup of a substance, such as pool water or soil. The pH indicator reacts with the substance and changes color, telling you if the substance is basic, acidic or neutral. Depending on the results, you may do nothing, or you may need to add something to amend the substance. Both the average homeowner and scientists measure pH using indicators. The device is common and easy to use.

Instructions

  1. Testing Liquid

    • 1

Dip a new --- unused --- pH indicator in the liquid for about 2 seconds.

    • 2

Remove the indicator gently, so that the strip doesn't vibrate or shake too much.

    • 3

Hold it level for a few seconds and compare the pH indicator to the guide on the side of the pH indicator bottle, or the chart provided inside the bottle. Low numbers on the scale indicate higher acidity, and high numbers on the scale indicate higher alkalinity. Neutral conditions register as green on the indicator or as the number seven on the pH scale.

    Testing Soil

    • 4

Dig a small hole in the soil with a trowel, in the area where you wish to plant, and remove any debris from the immediate area.

    • 5

Add some bottled water, which is pH neutral, to the hole and gently mix in some soil.

    • 6

Dip a new --- unused --- pH indicator in the liquid for about 2 seconds.

    • 7

Remove the indicator gently, so that the strip doesn't vibrate or shake too much.

    • 8

Hold it level for a few seconds and compare the pH indicator to the guide.
