How to Sharpen a Cub Cadet Mower Blade

Even the best mower won't do it's job well if the blade is dull. Mower manufacturers like Cub Cadet recommend removing and sharpening the blade regularly for the best performance. With a little care and some simple tools, you can extend the life of your blade and improve the performance of your Cub Cadet mower.

Instructions

    • 1

Take off the nut holding the mower blade to the drive shaft of the engine using a wrench. Turn to the left to loosen the nut while holding the blade with your hand and a heavy glove.

    • 2

Place the blade in a vise with the sharp leading edge of one side facing up. File the blade's leading edge at a 45-degree angle, removing any imperfections on the blade and renewing the edge.

    • 3

Turn the blade in the vise and repeat the filing on the other side of the blade.

    • 4

Slide a nail through the hole in the center of the blade and lift the nail up so it's parallel to the ground. Observe the blade. If it tips to one side, you must remove more metal from that side. Replace the blade in the vise and file some more, then test again. When the blade balances without tipping, you can replace it on the mower.
