Choose the materials you wish to make into mulch. If you have a lot of fallen trees, you can, for example use a wood chipper to chip up the branches and limbs.
Use a tire shredder, or take tires to a shredding service, and have them shredded to make a soft mulch bedding for underneath playgrounds. Tire mulch, when mixed with wood mulch, can also be used around ornamentals. The wood parts make it attractive while the tires help warm the soil and prevent any weeds from poking through, much like landscaping fabric.
Mix sand or gravel in with your wood chips to create a mulch that is heavier overall, helping to prevent erosion and making it easier to spread on varied terrain.
Add any number of fibers or other materials to your mixture. Coconut hulls add interest to a blend. Straw is an excellent ground cover and an inexpensive way to add bulk to your mulch.
