How to Control Flies Outside & Around Pools

Deer flies and horseflies provide an unwelcome presence when you are trying to enjoy the outdoors and pool areas. Flies watch for movement, landing and biting quickly before you have a chance to shoo them away. Flies tend to stay and buzz your head and upper body, creating a less-than-enjoyable outdoor experience. While they have a short life span, flies wreak havoc during that time. Using certain tricks and products reduces the aggravation caused by these annoying pests.

Instructions

    • 1

Light citronella candles or torches around the pool area. Let the candles or torches burn for 20 to 30 minutes to build up a barrier against the flies.

    • 2

Place sticky flycatchers close to the pool, hanging them from a porch or tree limbs. As the flies land on the flycatcher, they become attached, allowing you to trap and kill them.

    • 3

Place double-sided tape over the top and sides of a hat. Wear the hat around the pool. Deer flies landing on your head become trapped on the double-sided tape.

    • 4

Keep a flyswatter close by to smack flies as they land on the ground or furniture.

    • 5

Set a bowl filled halfway with water on an outside table. Place plastic wrap over the bowl. Punch three to four holes in the top of the plastic wrap. As flies climb through the holes into the bowl, they become trapped.
