How to Burn Grass Seed Fields

You can maintain and enhance your grassland by prescribed burning. Such burns increase plant growth, reduce the risk of large wildfires and recycle nutrients existent in old plant growth. To properly burn a grass seed field, you must use specific techniques under the proper weather conditions. Before you burn a grass seed field, you must understand the purpose and objective of burning the field. The purpose you have for a prescribed burn will determine the weather conditions necessary for your specific burn.

Instructions

  Light a backfire downwind of the prescribed burn area with a drip torch. This type of torch will drop three parts of oil mixture with one part gas, allowing an efficient fire application to the field. A backfire burns slowly since it burns against the wind.

  Light a flank fire starting at each end of the backfire and running parallel with the wind with a drip torch. The height of a flank fire flames is moderately high due to the fire moves perpendicular to the wind.

  Light a head fire with a drip torch. This consumes the remainder of the fuel. The flames of a head fire are large and move quickly because they burn with the direction of the wind.

  Monitor all sides of the fire with fire swatters, fire brooms and backpack water pumps until the fire has burned down completely.
