How to Stop Hornets From Nesting

Hornets, which are often referred to as wasps, yellow jackets or paper wasps, are beneficial insects that prey primarily on other insects. Humans consider hornets to be pests, as they can disrupt outdoor activities, sting and nest near homes or high-traffic areas. To minimize the risk of getting stung by a hornet, it is best to avoid going near their nesting places. There are precautions a homeowner can take to discourage hornets from nesting.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate and identify hornet nesting sites. Treat only nesting sites that are near the home or in heavy human traffic areas.

    • 2

Spray the inside of existing hornet nests with a wasp and hornet spray. Do this only during the early evening when hornet activity is minimal. Repeat the application nightly until hornets are no longer present. Remove and discard the nest.

    • 3

Pour a mixture of soap and water into ground nests. Cover ground nests with soil after exterminating all hornets.

    • 4

Search for the hornet's points of entry into the house and seal gaps with caulk. Points of entry may include attics, windows, door frames, open dampers, torn screens and unsealed vents.

    • 5

Remove food scraps, including pet food and open garbage containers left outdoors, which attract hornets. Remove or cover compost piles. Remove fallen fruit from the ground beneath fruit trees.
