How to Remove a Camden Tree

Located in New Jersey across from the Delaware River, Camden was once a thriving city full of industrial and manufacturing businesses. Camden, New Jersey is home to a wide array of tree species including oak, pine and acer. Even though these trees provide many benefits to wildlife and people, trees can become damaged, diseased or just unwanted. When this happens, removing the tree becomes a necessary option. However, tree removal is a dangerous task that -- if not careful -- can cause structural and bodily damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the Camden County Courthouse and inquire about a tree removal permit. Depending on the type of tree and location, you may be required to have a permit before removing the unwanted tree.

    • 2

Create the fall direction before beginning the removal process. Choose a fall direction that is free of buildings, homes, power lines, telephone lines and other structures.

    • 3

Plan the path you will take after you have made the last cut in the tree trunk. This escape path extends directly behind the tree. Keep this path free of obstacles.

    • 4

Check the chainsaw blade for damage and dullness. Replace the blade if needed. Wear a pair of thick work gloves, safety goggles and move to the side of the tree trunk that faces the direction the tree will fall.

    • 5

Turn the chainsaw on and make a 45-degree notch into the tree trunk. This notch -- called the undercut -- should measure 1/4 of the trunk diameter.

    • 6

Walk slowly and carefully to the opposite side of the tree. Place the chainsaw blade 2-inches above the undercut and cut through the trunk, stopping a few inches before you reach the undercut. This is the backcut and you should never cut all the way through to the undercut. Doing so will cause the tree to fall unpredictably.

    • 7

Turn the chainsaw off and walk away from the tree via the escape path you previously planned. Let the tree call on its own and stay clear until it is completely down.
