How to Install Turf & Crushed Rock

Installing turf, also known as artificial grass, in a yard provides an inexpensive, low-maintenance ground cover. This porous material allows excess water to drain properly, and you can clean it with a vacuum cleaner. Installing turf over crushed rock is a weekend do-it-yourself project, and the results will last for years.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a tape measure to determine the dimensions of the area where you want to install turf.

    • 2

Unearth sod and 3 inches of dirt with a flat shovel. Pitch the ground toward a safe drainage outlet at a 1-inch decline for every 10 feet of length.

    • 3

Use a manual tamp to make the rocks as tight and compact as possible. If the ground feels moist to the touch, wait a day for it to dry completely.

    • 4

Lay down weed barrier mesh over the dirt bottom and pin it down with lawn spikes.

    • 5

Pour a 2-inch layer of 1/4-inch rock aggregate. If you use larger rocks, the edges can protrude through the turf. Tamp the aggregate and use a bubble level to check it is level.

    • 6

Spread a 1/2-inch layer of fine sand over the rocks. Lay a board on top of the sand and drag it across so there are no dips on the surface.

    • 7

Lay the first roll of turf in one corner of the site and roll it out in a straight line against one side. Cut any excess from the bottom of the roll with a sharp utility knife. Position the knife downward.

    • 8

Lay down the next roll of turf. Use 12-inch-wide seam tape and outdoor carpet glue to seal the seams together.

    • 9

Hammer 6-inch nails every 2 feet around the perimeter of the turf. Use a rake or power broom to brush the turf across the width of each strip.
