Use a tape measure to determine the dimensions of the area where you want to install turf.
Unearth sod and 3 inches of dirt with a flat shovel. Pitch the ground toward a safe drainage outlet at a 1-inch decline for every 10 feet of length.
Use a manual tamp to make the rocks as tight and compact as possible. If the ground feels moist to the touch, wait a day for it to dry completely.
Lay down weed barrier mesh over the dirt bottom and pin it down with lawn spikes.
Pour a 2-inch layer of 1/4-inch rock aggregate. If you use larger rocks, the edges can protrude through the turf. Tamp the aggregate and use a bubble level to check it is level.
Spread a 1/2-inch layer of fine sand over the rocks. Lay a board on top of the sand and drag it across so there are no dips on the surface.
Lay the first roll of turf in one corner of the site and roll it out in a straight line against one side. Cut any excess from the bottom of the roll with a sharp utility knife. Position the knife downward.
Lay down the next roll of turf. Use 12-inch-wide seam tape and outdoor carpet glue to seal the seams together.
Hammer 6-inch nails every 2 feet around the perimeter of the turf. Use a rake or power broom to brush the turf across the width of each strip.
