How to Fill Cavities of Splitting Trees

Trees become damaged from age, weather and disease. They sometimes split and rot from within, causing a cavity. This cavity retains moisture, causing more rapid rot. In some severe cases, standing water inside the cavity is found and insect infestation will result. Using a foam relieves some of these problems associated with tree cavities. The tree can then be sealed and its health monitored.

Things You'll Need

  • Polyurethane spray foam
  • Handsaw
  • Small mesh screen

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the soft rotted wood from the inside of the tree. Remove any standing water, and dry the inside as much as possible.

    • 2

Spray the polyurethane foam into the tree. Allow the foam to expand and dry. Cut away any excess foam from the tree.

    • 3

Cut the mesh screen to fit the open areas where only foam is seen. Hold the screen in place and secure with tacks. Using the trowel, apply a layer of plaster over the screen. Allow to dry completely.
