How to Test a Humidistat Outdoor Sensor

Humidistats regulate the humidity inside your home, much the same way thermostats regulate temperature. Some models receive input from outdoor temperature sensors, which the humidistat uses to control indoor condensation. If you see the outdoor temperature displayed on your humidistat control box, your unit uses an outdoor temperature sensor. There are several ways to check whether the sensor is working correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that the outside temperature sensor is sending data. If your humidistat does not display the current outdoors temperature, check the wiring to ensure the sensor is properly connected to your system.

    • 2

Check your windows for condensation. If the outdoor humidistat temperature sensors are sending good information -- indeed, if the overall system is working well -- then there should be little or no condensation. A properly working humidistat will use temperature and humidity data to avoid reaching dew point.

Verify the outdoor temperature. Measure the temperature within 1 foot of your humidistat temperature sensor with a thermometer. If you do not get the same reading from both devices, the unit may need to be calibrated or repaired.
