How to Figure the Coverage of Limestone Yardage

Home owners can use crushed limestone for outdoor projects such as filling a driveway since limestone may be cheaper than concrete. Building supply stores sell limestone by volume in cubic yards, not by coverage area in square yards. This is because the coverage of crushed limestone depends on how deep your layer is, and thus one cubic yard can cover different sized areas for different projects. You can determine the coverage with multiplication and division.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert the limestone to cubic inches by multiplying the number of cubic yards by 46,656. For instance, if you purchase 2 cubic yards of crushed limestone you have 93,312 cubic inches.

    • 2

Divide the cubic inches by the depth of fill. For example, if you layer the rocks 4 inches deep, then you compute 93,312 divided by 4, which equals 23,328. This is the coverage in square inches

    • 3

Divide the number of square inches by 144 to obtain the number of square feet. For example, since 23,328/144 = 162, this means your limestone will cover 162 square feet.

    • 4

Divide the number of square feet by nine if you wish to find the coverage in square yards. Since 162/9 = 18, this is equivalent to 18 square yards.
