How to Burn a Tree Pile Fast

Burning a pile of dead or cut down trees is often the easiest way to dispose of such a large quantity of debris. But whether or not your pile burns in an afternoon or takes days depends on how you set up your piles. Burning multiple smaller piles of trees and brush instead of one large pile will allow the fire to consume the trees more quickly and shorten your burning time. Adding accelerants, such as gasoline or flammables, will only have a short-term increase in burning speed and will end up slowing down the overall burning process once they burn off.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your brush piles in an open location with no trees, structures or dry brush nearby.

    • 2

Make small piles out of your trees, placing the driest and smallest trees and branches at the bottom of the pile.

    • 3

Dig a fire line around your burn piles at least 2 feet wide.

    • 4

Gather a shovel, rake and water source, such as a garden hose, water tank or bucket filled with water.

    • 5

Light the dry, small trees and branches underneath the pile, using a propane torch in multiple places. Continue lighting the pile in different locations until a steady fire is going.

    • 6

Add branches, leaves and needles to the fire, a little at a time, once the fire is going strong and hot.

    • 7

Extinguish any stray sparks that ignite outside of the fire line, using a shovel or water.

    • 8

Spray the fire with water once the burn is complete, then shovel dirt on top to fully extinguish it. Check for hot spots and coals, and make sure your fire is completely out before leaving the area.
