How to Evaporate Wastewater Ponds

A wastewater pond is an area used for water treatment. It collects dirty water and filters it. Part of how wastewater ponds work is that the water in the pond evaporates, leaving behind bacteria, debris and waste. The evaporated water is free of these substances. The faster the evaporation, the faster the pond can process the water. There are several ways that the evaporation process can be sped up or made more efficient.

Install fans to blow across the surface of the water. Air movement across the water's surface helps speed up evaporation. It also helps reduce humidity in the air above the water. Decreased humidity helps in evaporation. Construction fans that are water resistant are best. These type of fans can simply be positioned on the edge of the pond; construction fans come with their own stands. The fans can be plugged into an adjacent outlet. If no outlet exists then a generator will be necessary. The power of the generator should match the amount of power required by the fans.

Install heaters in the waterwater pond. Heat is the primary cause of evaporation. For example, a boiling pot of water evaporates quickly. High-quality water heaters can help evaporate a wastewater pond quickly. There are many types of water heaters, both electric and gas. The installation method will vary depending on which model is used. Electric heaters are easier to install. Just place them in the water and plug them in to an outlet or generator. However, they will increase the electricity bill.

Use a backhoe or shovels to extend the area of the pond, depending on its size, by removing earth from the edges of the pond. Do not dig too deep; 1 to 2 feet is ideal. Shallow water evaporates faster; which is why the extension should not be deep. This method is useful for smaller ponds but inefficient for large ones.
