Empty the tank of as much propane as possible. Moving a tank containing propane is not particularly dangerous, but it adds a lot of weight. A 500-pound tank refers to the amount of LP gas the tank will hold. When empty, the tank weighs 950 pounds; full, the tank weighs 1450 pounds. Wait until you have used all the propane in the tank or ask your propane supplier to remove any residual propane in your tank, and then to add it back once the tank has been relocated.
Turn the shut-off valve on the top of the tank to the closed position.
Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the copper pipe leading from the regulator on the tank to the house. Once it has been disconnected, the copper pipe can easily be bent out of the way by hand.
Loop the ends of a 12-foot long, 5/16 (or heavier) steel chain through the chain attachment connections located at each end of the tank.
Position the bucket of a front-end loader over the center of the tank, high enough so that it will not contact the fittings and regulator on the top of the tank.
Drape the chain over the bucket and adjust the length of each half of the chain with the chain's end hooks, so that each half tightens simultaneously and the tank remains horizontal when lifted.
Raise the bucket until the tank lifts off the ground. Slowly drive the tractor to the tank's new location and lower it to its new spot.
