How to Lay Turf Over an Asphalt Parking Lot

Sod cannot be laid and successfully sustained over a parking lot, because its roots cannot extend deeply enough. However, asphalt can be covered with artificial turf. This solution can turn a dreary, crumbling parking lot into an attractive space for people to have picnics, play soccer and enjoy in other ways. Laying artificial turf over a parking lot requires the same process as with any other surface, except special glue is used along the edges instead of landscaping nails.

Things You'll Need

  • Finely crushed gravel
  • Rake
  • Seam tape
  • Turf adhesive
  • Turf-to-pavement glue

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the square footage of the parking lot, so you know how much artificial turf to order. Sweep the parking lot and remove all debris.

    • 2

Spread a 2-inch layer of finely crushed stone over the parking lot. Smooth it with a rake, and compact it the best you can. Make sure it is as even as possible.

    • 3

Unroll the turf so all the fibers are going in the same direction.

    • 4

Secure the rolls of artificial turf together. To do this, pull back on the turf about 1 foot. Lay the seam tape beneath it, apply the adhesive and flop the two sides of turf together, adjoining them tightly. Make sure the seam is straight and even. Smooth out any wrinkles in the turf.

Secure the edges of the laid turf to the asphalt with artificial turf glue. It's made for this purpose and keeps it in place.
