How Do You Siphon Off Propane Gas to Throw an Old Tank Away?

When dealing with flammable gas such as propane, it is best to consult a professional before attempting to transfer the gas or dispose of an old tank. If you do not feel comfortable with the procedure, first seek out an expert. If you have an old propane tank that you want to throw away, you'll first need to transfer the gas to another tank.

Set the empty tank in the shade for an hour or keep it indoors. Place the tank with propane in the sun for about an hour. The receiving tank must be cooler than the distributing tank for the transfer to work properly.

    • 2

Attach the ends of a hose to each tank's nozzle. Screw the hose clamp tight at each end.

    • 3

Turn the distributing tank upside down on the ground and set it at a higher elevation than the receiving tank. If you have a flat lawn, you might consider setting the tanks on the slope of a driveway or on the steps of a deck.

Open the valve on the receiving tank. Then open the valve on the distributing tank. Close the distributing tank's valve when the receiving tank is 80 percent full (most American-made tanks should do this automatically). Finally, close the valve on the receiving tank and remove the hose.
