How to Make a Boom for a Pull-Behind Tank Sprayer

Spray booms are a practical method for applying pesticides over a large area efficiently. A pull-behind trailer with a sprayer tank can be fitted with a boom made of square metal tubing and spray nozzles can be fitted together on vinyl tubing. However, each nozzle on the spray boom needs to be spaced according to manufacturer's directions. The spray boom should also be mounted a proper distance above the spray surface for optimizing spray contact. Assembly of the spray boom does not require special tools and the parts can be obtained from a number of sources.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two 9 1/2-inch lengths of vinyl tubing with the razor knife. Install the barbed "T" between these two pieces. The perpendicular part of the "T" connects to the pump outlet.

    • 2

Insert a spray nozzle fitting on both sides of the tubing. Cut two more pieces of vinyl tubing that are 19.5 inches long. Install them over the barbs on the inner nozzles and insert nozzles on each end. Cut two more pieces of vinyl tubing that are 1 1/2 inches long and insert them over the end spray nozzle barbs. Insert a barbed stopper on each end. Secure all barbed fittings with hose clamps.

Cut the square steel tubing with the hack saw to a final length of 6' 8". Drill two holes in the tubing where the flat steel bars can be attached to the pull-behind trailer. Drill a hole on each end of the flat steel bars. Attach the steel bars with the 1 1/4-inch bolts and fit on the bolts. Prime and paint the bar for corrosion protection.

Drill holes in the two mounting locations on the trailer. Position the two mounting bar holes over these holes, insert the bolts and fasten them onto the trailer with the nuts. Attach the spray bar tubing to the metal bar with zip ties. Connect the bar tubing to the pump with a piece of vinyl tubing, and secure each end with a hose clamp.
