How to Drain Your Lawn Sprinkler Pump

An underground lawn sprinkler system has a network of water lines that connect to a central pump. The pump provides water to the sprinkler heads during watering. However, in the cold winter months the system must be drained and shut off to prevent damage. Draining the sprinkler pump is a multi-step process that must be followed carefully until all water is removed. Water stuck in the lines or pump can freeze, damaging the system.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the water supply valve that runs from the home water line to the sprinkler system. This is often inside the basement, near the sprinkler system pump. Turn off the water supply.

    • 2

Lift off the pump cover or use the wrench to loosen the pump cover fastener and then remove the cover. Use your hands to pick out any debris inside.

    • 3

Power on the sprinkler system pump. Allow it to run for five minutes or less. This pushes remaining water out of the system lines. Do not run more than five minutes as this could burn out the pump, since the water supply is turned off. Turn off the pump when you are finishe and disconnect the power supply.

    • 4

Loosen the clamp around the inlet line running to the pump with the wrench. Note that some pumps may have clamps that loosen with a screw; in this case use a flat head screwdriver.

    • 5

Remove the inlet line and allow water to drain out. You can use a large bucket to catch water.

    • 6

Locate the drain valve on the side of the pump and turn it to the open position. Place the large bucket under the valve to collect the draining water.

    • 7

Spray gaskets on the pump with gasket lubricant. Allow the lubricant and droplets of water that may remain to dry.

    • 8

Replace the pump cover. Cover the the pump with a tarp or plastic sheet to prevent moisture from seeping into the pump.
