Survey the trees and the surrounding area. See whether a tree leans in one direction, whether or not it has heavy branches or limbs, loose bark, or if it's dead. If possible, saw off any large branches prior to cutting down the tree you want to remove.
Clear the surrounding area of branches, sticks and debris so you can escape once you are done cutting the tree.
Decide the direction the tree will fall. This is where you will make your first cut. If the tree leans in a particular direction, then it is best to cut the tree down in the same direction. Use a chainsaw to remove any part of the tree that may make contact with other trees or outdoor structures, like a house or car.
From about 1 foot from the tree stump, cut a straight line about one-third of the way into the tree. Make the second cut meet the first cut downward at a 60-degree angle. Remove the stump of wood.
Move to the opposite side of the tree. Cut the chainsaw through the tree until it stops 2 inches short of the cut on the other side. This creates a hinge and controls the fall of the tree.
Turn off your chain saw and get out of the way quickly. Don't run or look behind you. Face away from the tree until you hear it fall. Return to the tree after it falls to saw it up into smaller, more manageable pieces.
