How to Get Rid of Pea Rock Under Playgrounds

Because pea rock is composed of small, rounded stones, it is a practical choice for playgrounds. Children can play on playground equipment and will not suffer a serious injury if they fall. Although pea rock can be convenient and easy to maintain, it does limit your landscaping ability. If you choose to remove the pea rock, an industrial-strength vacuum is a useful tool. An industrial-strength vacuum such as a Shop Vac, can suck up rocks and sharp items without damaging its internal mechanisms. Ensure that the industrial vacuum you use is bagless and includes hose attachments.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all mobile equipment from the playground and set it on a grassy area. If the playground has equipment that is bolted into the ground or is extremely heavy, do not attempt to move the equipment. The more clear space you have the better, but you can still remove the pea rocks with playground equipment present, if necessary.

    • 2

Transfer the majority of the pea rock into a wheelbarrow, using a shovel. Once the wheelbarrow is full, empty the pea rock into a designated storage area. Repeat this process until you can no longer shovel the pea rock without pulling up soil.

    • 3

Connect the hoses and attachments to the industrial-strength vacuum cleaner. Ensure that the filter is inserted inside the vacuum drum.

    • 4

Plug in the industrial-strength vacuum, using an extension cord. Slide the vacuum backward over the playground to suck up the remainder of the pea rock. Use the hose attachment to remove pea rock from the corners and crevices of the playground.

    • 5

Remove the lid of the vacuum and empty the pea rock into your storage area when the vacuum is full. Repeat this process until there is no pea rock remaining. Haul the pea rock to the dump in a truck, reuse it for other landscaping or post an ad offering the pea rock to anyone who will haul it.
