Weed Eater FL20 Type 1 Vs. Type 2

Weedeaters are a popular string trimmer brand for residential use. Many homeowners opt for Featherlite series models, in particular, because of their light weight, as the name suggests. Price is often the determining factor in purchasing FL20 trimmers because they are the lowest priced of all Featherlite trimmers on the market. Prices for Type 1 and Type 2 FL20s start at around $60, as of October, 2011.
  1. FL20

    • The Featherlite series has two FL20 models -- the FL20 and the FL20C. The FL20 is the basic model. It has a 20cc, 2-cycle engine and is gas-fueled. It weighs in at only 8.8 pounds, so the light weight makes it easy for men and women to use with minimal exertion. It has a 15-inch cutting path and a single-exit “Tap ‘N Go” head that with a 0.65 diameter string line. The size dimensions are 33 inches long by 10.8 inches wide and 10 inches tall. The FL20C is 0.2 pounds lighter, weighing in at 8.6 pounds, and is marketed by the manufacturer as the lightest trimmer on the market.

Type 1 and Type 2 Similarities

    • You would not be able to tell a FL20 Type 1 from a Type 2 if they were standing side-by-side. They weigh the same and have the same features and performance capabilities. The 2-cycle motor is powerful enough for residential use, and the 15-inch path is adequate for handling average size lawns and lot sizes, under one-half acre. The manufacturer recommends an oil-to-gas ratio of 1:40; however, many users opt for a 1:50 ratio to prevent over-saturating the engine, which can make any petrol-driven trimmer difficult to start.

    Differences

    • The only difference between the two types is in the fan housing assembly. The top of the fan housing assembly is flat on Type 1, and has a gasket attachment (part number 530-019181). Type 2 models have a beveled surface on the top edge of the fan housing, with an O-ring attachment (part 530-056097) instead of a gasket. Other than that, there are no visible or performance-based differences, nor is there a price difference, based on the difference in the fan housing assembly parts.

    Considerations

    • FL20 models may not have a long lifespan compared to higher priced trimmers. If you have a large lot, tough turf and intricate landscaping, you might consider upgrading to a more expensive model in the Featherlite series, such as a 4-cycle model in the FLSST series. This is also true if you’re looking for a trimmer for commercial purposes such as doing professional landscaping work. FL20 trimmers have small fuel tanks, and consequently may require refueling more frequently than higher priced trimmers, which can be a hindrance and nuisance when completing work for commercial landscaping clients or if you own a large lot.
