Allis Chalmers Garden Tractor Sickle Bar Setup Instructions

Cutting the tall grass on your property with a trimmer is both time consuming and exhausting. An Allis Chalmers sickle bar is ideal for this project because it converts the power from your tractor's motor into a large set of scissors. These scissors are mounted to the side of the tractor using only a few tools, and can cut up to 1.2 acres per hour. If the sickle bar comes into contact with an obstruction it swings back to avoid damage to the unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Align the hinge assembly and drive mechanism with the mounting brackets on the frame and push the hinge shaft through both holes. Secure the shaft in place by pushing two cotter pins through the holes on either end of the hinge shaft.

    • 2

Fasten the sickle bar to the bottom of the cutter bar with two hex head bolts and one plow bolt. Slide flat washers, then lock-washers over the bolts, and tighten the bolts with a wrench.

    • 3

Attach the drive link assembly to the sickle head with a spacer, hex bolt, flat washer and lock nut and tighten with a wrench.

    • 4

Push the spacer into the hole in the drive link so the end of the spacer is between the sickle head and drive link.

    • 5

Connect the small looped end of the tension spring to the vertical bracket on the frame assembly. This is done using a bushing, bolt, lock-washer and nut; tighten with a wrench.

    • 6

Raise the end of the cutting blade with your hand until the other end of the spring can hook onto the lift cable brace.

    • 7

Push the drive belt onto the drive pulley and pull the other end through the belt guard. Fasten the divider board to the inner side of the bracket with a carriage bolt and lock nut. Adjust the tightness of the lock nut until the board swivels freely.

    • 8

Position the sickle bar frame on the right hand side of the tractor. Slide it underneath until the front mounting brackets align with the tractor's mounting holes. Push pins through the holes and secure with cotter pins.

    • 9

Fasten the chain support to the tractor's frame with a bolt, lock washer and nut. Connect the other end of the chain to the chain support with a pin and spring clip. This chain provides vertical support for the sickle bar so it doesn't drag on the ground.
