What Size of Lawn for a Reel Mower?

Ideal Lawn Size

• According to American-Lawns, the reel mower is ideal for lawns that are 2,000 square feet or less in size. For example, a lawn that is 20 feet wide and 100 feet long is 2,000 square feet. Lawns shouldn’t have hills or slopes, which will make the hand mower harder to navigate and push.

Advantages

• The reel mowers you buy today are lightweight compared to the old mowers from years ago because the design of the mower has been streamlined to make the mower more people friendly. The mower is almost maintenance free. The only thing that the mower will need is the blade sharpened about every two to three years. When you are cutting the lawn, you are not contributing to the noise pollution because there is no engine on a reel mower.

Disadvantages

• Mowing a lawn with a rotary mower may take 30 minutes, but when you use a reel mower, it will take you longer to mow the grass because you must use your physical strength and energy to push the mower. Reel mowers do come with rear baggers, but if you want to mulch the clippings, the reel mower doesn’t have the ability to do the task.

Scalping

• Reel mowers won’t scalp the grass when you push it over uneven spots in the grass as a rotary mower will do. Scalping happens when you use a rotary mower set at a certain height on uneven ground. For example, if you set the mower for the low ground and mow the grass on the high ground without changing the mowing height, you will remove more grass on the high ground than what you do in the low areas. The result is short grass in the high area and a good cutting height in the low areas.
